Book Giveaways

At For the Love of Reading, we do strategic book giveaways in elementary schools for Pre-K thru 5th grades. We provide two giveaways per year, per grade. With a fantastic selection of engaging books to choose from, children can take home two new books at each giveaway.

Book Giveaways – Our Approach

Reading is a basic human right, and children deserve to see themselves and others reflected in the books they encounter. They have the right to choose what they read and to read simply for pleasure.

Children benefit immensely from personal book choice, extensive time set aside for reading, and the enjoyment of reading.

A diverse selection of books in the classroom increases the time children spend reading and boosts their reading scores.

The more books a household has, the more positive the impact.

The skills of decoding, vocabulary acquisition, and understanding context are necessary to learning to read. A key part of this process is surrounding children with books.

Classroom Readers

At For the Love of Reading, we have volunteer readers in as many classrooms as possible. We match readers with teachers to find a weekly time to read quality, vetted books to the class.

Classroom Readers – Our Approach

We strive to employ a dialogic reading model with our volunteer readers. Through dialogic reading (DR), the reader engages the listener in a dialog about the book through questions, answers, and repetition.

Multiple studies have found that DR can improve language skills (Towson et al., 2023), emotional intelligence (Xu, 2023), patterning (Wijns et al., 2023), and ELL oral skills (Kennedy & McLoughlin, 2023). A systematic review of DR by Pillinger and Vardy in 2022 observed that DR is capable of aiding children’s literacy and language development.

Through our classroom readers, we hope to expose more children to this beneficial process, all while enjoying great books together.
